Programme Manager in Digital IT | ABSA BANK
2011 - 2013

Accounting, Banking and Finance

Implement a new technology (Backbase) platform Internet Banking system.
Manage multiple projects in the Internet Banking environment, running RAD (Rapid Application Development)
Manage interfaces to other banking systems
Manage all deploys into production, at a rate of 3+ times per month

Portfolio Manager - Absa Card IT | ABSA BANK
2010 - 2011

Accounting, Banking and Finance

I joined Absa Bank (the largest bank in South Africa and member of the Barclays Bank Group in the UK) in November 2005. I successfully ran a number of Banking and Card Projects in the Africa Banking space. I was then asked to join the Card IT division to manage the Migration of a new JV, Woolworths. Following the success I had with the Woolworths Credit Card Migration from the Prime2 System to the Absa CAMS system, I was asked to take over the Portfolio Management of Absa Card IT.

Project Manager - Migration of Card to Absa | Woolworths Limited
2009 - 2010

Consumer Goods, Fashion and Retail

Absa Bank purchased a controlling share in Woolworths Financial Services (PTY ) Ltd. I managed the project to migrate the Credit Card Clients onto the Absa Card System. This required an extremely complex migration, that included a complex requirement to migrate the Card PIN numbers, without ever allowing any number to be visible in the clear, which involved the auditing by VISA to ensure this. The WFS Cards were being run on a combination of three disparate systems (CAMS, Vision Plus and C2). Data had to be migrated and balanced from all three these systems.

Senior Business Analyst | ABSA BANK
2005 - 2009

Accounting, Banking and Finance

Started and completed the analysis to upgrade the banking systems for the Absa Africa Banks. This involved the Flexcube Banking System and the CTL Card System. Prior to this I also ran a project to convert the Mozambican Currency when it was devalued, converting 1000 Old Metical to 1 New Metical. The Project involved working with the Central Bank in Mozambique and assisting them with the balancing of their records back to all the other banks .
Both these projects involved working with offshore development teams as well as testing. All implementations were done in South Africa, with the assistance of the off-shore development teams.

IT Project Manager | Self Employed Project Manager
2001 - 2005

Accounting, Banking and Finance

Ran a number of differing size projects all over Africa and South Africa. This was not stimulating as there was no continuity and no real challenges. Decided to go back to big business and started with Absa Bank, where there were many challenges and large projects.

Manager IT | Lonmin Platinum
1993 - 2001

Was tasked to move company into the IT Age.
Built IT Department from 8 to 50 Employees. Moved from small AS400 base to 52 Servers in 3 countries, 3 mines, 2 refineries, using Satellite, Terrestrial, Microwave, Fibre Networks. User numbers rose from 40 to 3000. Implemented full ERP system with Workflow, Geology systems, Complex Payroll / HR, Refining Systems and many more.

Senior IT Consultant | Apex Consulting
1989 - 1993

Accounting, Banking and Finance

I completed the analysis, design and development of the following systems, while in my second stint at Apex:
Processed Meat System including Recipes, Ordering, Costing, Production Planning
Route Planning
HR / Payroll
Feedlot System
Planned Maintenance

DP Manager | CHI Control
1987 - 1989

Accounting, Banking and Finance

This position was a bit of a Jack-of-all-Trades position, where I was in charge of the entire IT Department, then known as the DP (Data Processing) Department, while doubling as Project Manager and Senior Analyst. The remaining staff were Programmers and Schedulers. This was a particularly difficult position.
Before I joined CHI Control, the “Data Processing” department reported to the accountant, who had no understanding of the dynamics that operate amongst IT personnel. This resulted in a huge staff turnover, with the resultant lack of continuity and extremely poor systems quality. Fortunately, David had the full support of the CEO of the company, enabling him to make the changes required to stabilise the department. Within two years all the systems had stabilized. The Data Processing Department had been converted into an Information Systems Department, supplying management with timely, accurate information.

Development Manager | Gencor / Kanhym
1984 - 1987

Accounting, Banking and Finance

Gencor purchased Kanhym, which in turn owned Enterprise Foods. I was employed as Development Manager to continue the work I had started for Enterprise at Apex Consulting. It was also a promotion for me and uplift in my salary. As part of my tenure at Gencor I was involved in the following projects, which I managed:
- Designed and built a new Computer Facility to house all the company's IT Infrastructure in one controlled central facility.
- Real-time integration from the Kanhym HP3000 Systems to the Gencor Mainframe Systems.
- Country-wide real-time network to access the central Order Processing and Warehouse Control Systems.
- Continued the development of:
Order Processing
Production Planning
Recipe System for Processed Meat
Delivery Route Planning
General Ledger

Senior Analyst Programmer | Apex Data Bureau
1982 - 1984

Accounting, Banking and Finance

The company had three Major Clients: Karoo / Ochse, Prima Foods and JCI Share Registry. I developed many systems for these Clients, including:
- Share Registry System with Rights Issue facilities
- Feedlot System
- Processed Meat Order Processing System
- Production Planning and Ingredients Management System

Analyst Programmer | Everite Fibre Cement
1979 - 1982

Accounting, Banking and Finance

Everite’s entire order processing, inventory control and dispatch system was central mainframe based. A project was launched to distribute the systems to all the manufacturing plants, running on mini computers, which required a full redesign, development and implementation. Consolidated management information was transmitted electronically to the head office mainframe computer on a daily basis. Management information was produced at the remote sites as well as consolidated reporting at head office.

Senior Software Programmer | Safnit Mills
1975 - 1979

Accounting, Banking and Finance

When I joined Safnit, it had no IT Systems at all. All accounting and planning was done manually. I started the analysis, design and development of all the systems for the Company. They employed two other programmers to assist me. The systems we developed on HP9830 Systems included:
- Debtors
- Creditors
- General Ledger
- Payroll followed by HR
- Order Processing
- Inventory Control
